Description

This is an original oil on canvas painting by the celebrated aviation artist John Young.
It features two Avro Lancaster heavy bombers over Holland in April 1945 engaged in "Operation Manna" dropping much needed food supplies to the starving Dutch population.
Between the RAF and the USAAF over 11,000 tons of food aid was dropped
Eighty years ago this was the first major air relief campaign, a pre curser to the Berlin Air Lift and other humanitarian relief flights.
John Young was born in Bristol in 1930, went to the Royal Grammar School and studied art at the School of Art, High Wycombe, served in the RAF, worked in the studio of an advertising agency before becoming a full time artist in 1960. He was a past chairman of the Guild of Aviation Artists (1987-9), he won many international art awards and was considered one of the finest aviation artists of his generation. There are some 40 paintings by John Young at the RAF Museum at Hendon and many in private collections round the world.
