Description
Johnnie Johnson in his Spitfire Mk IX with two others from 127 Wing RAF, also known as "The Kenley Wing" mainly manned by Canadian pilots. Flying over Paris sometime after the Normandy campaign, probably after the end of August 1944. Paris was liberated on August 25th 1944.
This oil on canvas was a gift from the artist to Johnnie Johnson evidenced by the packing tube that the rolled canvas came in, with his last address in Derbyshire where Johnson died in 2001.
Ron Belling (1933-98) was a renowned aviation artist in South Africa and as this painting is dated 1996, this must have been amongst the last he painted.
Since we acquired the painting it has been stretchered, framed and is in excellent condition.
